Toxic also for the environment

The third article of the series "Poison in daily doses" shows that the environment of the state is already suffering the impact of indiscriminate use of these substances. On Sunday, a newspaper survey showed that rates of suicides and cancer deaths are highest in the Mid-South, Mountain and Northwest regions of Rio.
Presented last year at the Instituto Carlos Chagas, UFRJ, a doctoral thesis revealed high concentrations of endosulfan - substance used in pesticides - in the National Park of Serra dos Órgãos. Performed up to more than two thousand feet high, between 2007 and 2008, measurements have found that rates varied between 50 and 5500 picograms per cubic meter in the atmosphere, up to five times more than similar measurements made in research in Bolivia, also exceeding rates from Europe and the USA. At the time, was found equally serious situation in São Joaquim National Park, in Santa Catarina.
